Tchibo takes the pulse of German coffee trends with a new café concept

The coffee group is experimenting with a new standalone coffee bar to see if it can measure up to Hamburg’s independents

Founded in 1949, Hamburg-based coffee roaster and retailer Tchibo is one of Europe’s largest branded coffee chains, with 525 stores across its home market and a further 300 across seven international markets.

However, coffee is only one string in its bow.

Since the 1970s, Tchibo has engaged in non-coffee retail with a weekly rotating selection of clothing, household items and electronics, sold in its cafés. Today, alongside espressos and cappuccinos, Tchibo also sells garden furniture, sporting apparel and mobile phone plans.

With such an array of diversified retail items on offer, keeping abreast of customer demand is undoubtedly a tricky undertaking – particularly when someone coming into your store for their signature Café Caramello leaves with a four-man tent, surfboard or children’s wardrobe.
