Existing licensee Marcas INDEF has outlined plans to open 50 stores in the Latin American country by 2030, with a first outlet scheduled to open before the end of this year

Spanish bakery-café chain Santagloria has awarded master franchise rights to Yucatan-based Marcas INDEF to launch in Mexico, with 50 stores planned over the next five years.

Part of Madrid-based The FoodBox Group, Santagloria currently operates 180 outlets across Spain, Portugal and Andorra. The premium bakery-café chain expects to open its first store in Mexico before the end of 2025, which will mark its first expansion beyond the Iberian Peninsula.

Although based in Mexico, franchisee Marcas INDEF already operates five licensed Santagloria stores across Madrid and Bilbao and expects to open five more by the end of the year.

“The signing of this master franchise agreement represents a milestone in our international expansion plan. We firmly believe in the potential of the Mexican market and are confident that Marcas INDEF, which is already one of our main franchisees in Spain, is the ideal partner to develop the brand with the excellence and quality that characterises us,” said Alberto Chamorro, CEO, The FoodBox Group.

The FoodBox Group, which previously traded as FoodBox-Lateral, acquired Santagloria in March 2015. In December 2024, the hospitality group identified the bakery-café chain as a key growth brand as it seeks to scale its total brand footprint from 250 stores to 500 over the next three years.

The group, which achieved 10% year-on-year sales growth in 2024 to reach €154m ($174m), also operates the Volapié tapas concept, Papizza franchise, QSR chain MasQMenos and Italian restaurant franchise Vezzo.
