Bitesize Greggs has been launched at Sevenoaks Railway Station and will be rolled out on a trial basis to rekindle stalled outlet growth
UK food-to-go and coffee chain Greggs has unveiled a small-format store model aimed at high-footfall travel hubs and shopping centres.
The first ‘Bitesize Greggs’ launched at Sevenoaks Railway Station in Kent, with further sites set to open at Dartford Station and the Cheshire Oaks shopping centre in December 2025.
In a press release, Greggs said the rollout will start on a trial basis but, if successful, will form a key part of its long-term expansion strategy. The chain, which currently operates 2,675 outlets in the UK, said scaling the concept will enable it to cater to on-the-go customers at high-footfall, prime locations, where space constraints have previously been an obstacle.
Bitesize Greggs stores serve a smaller range of products than Greggs’ typical locations, which increasingly cater to made-to-order hot food and beverages.
“We’re excited to announce the launch of our ‘Bitesize Greggs’ concept. This small but mighty new format will allow us to reach more customers on the go from compact units, whilst still offering a selection of our best-selling products. The rollout of ‘Bitesize Greggs’, initially on a trial basis, will support our broader estate growth plans,” said Tony Rowson, Property Director, Greggs.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne-based Greggs is banking on smaller format stores to lift lagging footfall and reignite its growth plans after cutting its full-year outlet growth forecast from 160 net new stores to 120 in October 2025.
The UK food-to-go and coffee chain opened 130 new outlets during the first nine months of 2025 but closed 73 – leaving just 57 net new stores year-to-date. The closures follow a period of subdued sales and have typically impacted underperforming smaller stores less suited to high volumes of click & collect and delivery orders, as well as hot food preparation.
