The decision comes just a few months after Clough took on the newly-created role, which has responsibility for nearly 600 stores across the UK and Continental Europe

Pret A Manger has announced that Clare Clough is stepping down as Managing Director of its business in the UK and Europe, just four months after taking on the role

The UK food-to-go and coffee chain created the position in May 2025, with Clough taking on responsibility for 100 stores across Continental Europe in addition to the 490 she oversaw as UK Managing Director. Pret is yet to announce a replacement for Clough, who is departing to take a career break.

Clough’s decision brings her 15-year association with Pret to a close, which also included a spell as Chief Food and Coffee Officer – where she led the development of the chain’s vegetarian and vegan menus.

“Over the years, Clare has been instrumental in establishing Pret’s international presence, developing Pret’s allergy plan, leading the UK business through the Covid-19 pandemic and more recently serving as Managing Director for Europe. We’d like to thank Clare for her enormous contribution in making Pret what it is today and wish her the very best in her next endeavour,” a Pret A Manger spokesperson said.

Founded in London in 1986, Pret currently operates more than 700 outlets globally – 70% of which are in the UK. The coffee and food-to-go chain operates in a further 19 international markets, including the US, France, Hong Kong, the UAE and India.

The food-to-go and coffee chain has been part of JAB Holding’s extensive hospitality portfolio since 2018. In June 2025, it was reported that the private equity firm had engaged advisors to explore a market listing for Pret
