The French bakery-café group is planning to open 100 outlets across India by 2029 and joins the growing number of international operators seeking a slice of India’s opportune branded coffee shop market
France’s Bagelstein has debuted in India with a target to reach 100 outlets across the country by 2029.
The bakery-café group announced a master franchise agreement with Haryana-based franchise group FranGlobal in August 2024 and has opened its first store at the Nexus Mall in Kukatpally, Hyderabad.
Outlet growth will focus on India’s major cities, with Bagelstein also highlighting Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Pune as local markets of interest.
“India presents a strategic growth and exciting opportunity for us, and we are delighted to introduce our delicious blend of French charm and cuisine to Hyderabad,” said Thierry Veil, Founder & CEO, Bagelstein.
Founded in Strasbourg in 2011, Bagelstein currently operates 100 stores across France, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg and Switzerland. The group is in discussions to launch in the UK and Germany and has also signed franchise deals for the Middle East, in the UAE and Qatar.
Alongside its premium savoury bagels, which are baked daily at its production facility in Paris, Bagelstein also serves coffee, iced tea and a range of desserts. Bagels account for 45% of the brand’s sales, with desserts and beverages making up 35% and 20%, respectively.
India has become an attractive destination for coffee chains seeking international outlet growth.
Greece’s Coffee Island opened its first store in India in January 2025 and has opened three further sites as part of its goal to reach 250 outlets in the country by 2029. In April 2025, Indonesia’s largest coffee chain Kopi Kenangan entered the market with a goal of opening 10 stores by the end of 2025 and 50 over the next few years. It currently has three stores in the country.
UK-based Esquires Coffee, Greek chain Mikel Coffee and Belgian bakery-café chain Le Pain Quotidien are among the operators to have signed franchise deals to launch in India, with the latter seeking to open more than 100 outlets across the country by 2035.
