Greggs has reached 2,500 stores across the UK with a new petrol forecourt site at Sainsbury’s Cobham, Surrey.

In 2021, Greggs outlined a five-year growth plan which included a goal to reach 3,000 UK outlets in ‘the longer term’.

The value-focused business opened 145 net new stores last year to reach 2,473 sites and is seeking to open 160 new outlets in 2024 with a focus on travel hubs and roadside locations.

The Cobham store is Greggs’ eighth site in partnership with Sainsbury’s and its 50th supermarket outlet. The bakery chain also operates concession sites within Asda and Tesco shops.

With 146 net new stores, Greggs opened more sites than any other branded coffee chain in the UK last year – ahead of Starbucks’ 110 outlets. World Coffee Portal research shows that Greggs now holds a 24.3% share of the total UK branded coffee shop market and is fast approaching Costa Coffee’s market lead of approximately 2,670 outlets.
