Will Shu will leave the food delivery business he co-founded 12 years ago once the acquisition by California-based DoorDash is finalised next month
Deliveroo Founder and CEO Will Shu will step down from the food delivery giant after its planned acquisition by US rival DoorDash in October 2025.
Shu founded Deliveroo with Greg Orlowski in 2013 and scaled the business into one of the world’s largest and most recognisable F&B delivery companies. The London-based firm operates across 11 markets in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia, partnering with over 150,000 restaurants, cafés and grocery stores.
Its major coffee shop clients in the UK include Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Caffè Nero, Pret A Manger and Joe & The Juice. Deliveroo also partners with Dunkin’ in France, Le Pain Quotidien in Belgium, 12 oz in Italy and Toby’s Estate in the UAE.
In 2024, the platform achieved its first annual profit of £3m ($4.1m) compared with a £32m ($43.2m) loss in 2023.
San Francisco-based DoorDash announced an agreement to acquire Deliveroo for £2.9bn ($4bn) in May 2025, with the deal set to complete on 2 October 2025.
“Taking Deliveroo from being an idea to what it is today has been amazing. Today, the company’s growth and profitability are accelerating, and we are delivering on our mission to transform the way people shop and eat. But, after 13 years, I want to contemplate my next challenge,” Shu said in a statement.
The deal gives DoorDash a gateway into the UK food delivery market and will see it ramp up competition with fellow California-based delivery firm, Uber Eats. In the UK, the segment is dominated by Deliveroo, Uber Eats and London-based competitor Just Eat.
