Volcafe appoints former Starbucks Director as COO

The Swiss coffee trader says Tim Scharrer’s leadership skills and ‘deep coffee experience’ will enhance its global operations help develop its presence in Europe and East Africa

Swiss coffee trader Volcafe has appointed former Starbucks Managing Director Tim Scharrer as its news Chief Operating Officer and Regional Director for Europe & East Africa. 
 

Scharrer, who led Starbucks’s coffee trading division until October 2022, will start his new role in February 2023.  


Volcafe said that Scharrer will enhance and deliver operational excellence across all Volcafe entities. Additionally, he will be responsible for managing and ‘strategically developing’ Volcafe’s presence in Europe and East Africa. 


Scharrer was previously Managing Director of Starbucks Coffee Trading Company, responsible for Starbucks’ coffee purchasing and pricing strategy. He also oversaw the Seattle-based coffee chain’s Farmer Support Centre network around the world. 


Prior to joining Starbucks, Scharrer worked for eight years at Volcafe in Colombia (Carcafe).

Volcafe is an international coffee trader, specialising in worldwide green coffee procurement, processing in origin countries and distribution to roaster partners.  


In May 2022 Volcafe partnered with management consulting service provider dss+ to assess and work to reduce its carbon footprint across its global supply chain.
