Dutch Bros raises $2.3m for ALS research on annual Drink One for Dane day

Oregon-based drive-thru coffee chain Dutch Bros has raised $2.3m during its 16th annual Drink One for Dane day, a charity day which has taken place each May since Dutch Bros co-founder, Dane Boersma, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Dutch Bros has raised more than $12.6m in total for the Muscular Dystrophy Association since 2007.

Coffee drinkers may be at lower risk of early death, study suggests

Researchers in China have reported that people who consume a moderate amount of coffee every day have a lower risk of death over a seven-year period than those who do not, even when people add sugar to their beverage. The most noticeable reduction, according to the research team from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, was seen for those drinking between 2.5 and 4.5 cups a day, which carries a 29% lower risk of death.

Scotland enforces single use plastics ban

Scotland has become the first part of the UK to implement a ban on many of the most problematic single-use plastics, cups and other beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene. Approximately 700 million of single-use items are currently used in Scotland every year, with environmental charity Zero Waste Scotland estimating that only 0.25% of disposable cups are currently recycled across the UK.

South Korean coffee industry pockets $216m from unspent coffee cards

A report from the Fair Trade Commission has revealed that the South Korean coffee industry has accumulated approximately 270bn won ($216m) worth of unspent stored value on prepaid cards and online coupons, 92% of which came from Starbucks Korea. Starbucks said in its 2022 first-quarter fiscal report that it had accumulated over $2bn in all markets via ‘stored value card liability and current portion of deferred revenue’.

Davos leaders call for fairer risk distribution to support smallholder farms

Senior leaders from business, government and finance gathered at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos to explore ways to overcome barriers and enable more efficient value distribution in favour of smallholder farmers. Facilitators challenged attendees, including Nestlé, JBS and Unilever, to consider how their trade systems could be overhauled to distribute risk and value more equitably in their value chains.

Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii strengthens Florida presence

Premium Hawaiian coffee chain Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii has announced an agreement with Florida-based franchise group High Caffeine Inc. to open five new stores in the Tampa region of the state in the next 18 months. The coffee franchise, which aims to operate 150 new locations over the next five years, currently has 23 stores in operation, and six opening soon.
